Great! Interestingly, that's only about half the thickness of what I remember Harold Dermott selling me for the Bronze in 1985. It's not cheap though!

I'm just wondering what I'm going to find when I do manage to lift my front carpet. All I can see poking around the edges of the carpet appears to be black bin liners. I'm mystified about why they were used, but it must have seemed like a good idea to someone.

and how about some cheap LED headlights http://www.cbsonline.co.uk/product/LED_ ... _PROLEDSET

I know these lead sheets because the Corby factory used them, I had it in my first mk3 coupe. GTM didn't. I had a sort of felt underneath the carpets of my convertible. I want to try to avoid the lead sheets because I think it's a pity of the weight. I just saw the video of the Singer 911 by Chris Harris. It was shown that the Singer people had hired a specialist who came up with a few sorts of foam blocks for sound deadening. It was used for aircraft as well, so should be light.

I thought the lead sandwich was only used against the front bulkhead, but can't remember how far back along the floor it covered until the plastic sandwich started.

I've never really been a fan of the foam plastic sandwich used as under carpet, behind the firewall makes sense as its easier to cut a shape.

For underfloor purposes a dynamat or other equivalent has always sounded more appealing. Its usual stuck to the floor - flashing tape style.

The previous owner had put something similar in my car, it worked but isn't well secured at the heel board, it keeps falling down on the passenger side!

Just to add, this stuff can be heavy for its purpose, though admittedly there would not be much used in a midas, especially if you're only doing the floor!

The whole floor of my mk3 coupe was covered with the lead foam sandwich.

Carpet

Postby b1zbaz » Mon Jan 21, 2013 10:44 am

Mine was also covered completely with the lead foam sandwich it was nice and heavy which is no good in a car designed to be lightweight I was hoping that somebody knew where I could get carpet from cut to size but I will just do it myself not bothered about sound deadening just carpet alone will make enough difference for my liking I might just use studio carpet off my mate he usually gets roll ends which would be free anyway so sod it I'm going to turn myself into an upholsterer for the day wish me luck and if it works I will bring as many roll ends as poss to stoneleigh which you can all help yourselves to

In refurbishing my mk2 I am also doing the interior and I have already made some templates for the carpet.

With regards to sound proofing you do need dead weight to reduce the sound intrusion into the cabin. There's five different types of sound, transmitted, reflected, flanking, impact and the fifth I've forgotten. Engine mounts can reduce the sound transmission through the chassis into the cockpit. Mass will help reduce sound intrusion passing through the bulkhead. Closing the doors and windows will reduce the flanking sound that runs round the car anger into the cockpit. Soft surfaces will reduce the reflected noise bouncing around inside the cockpit.

The cars that I've seen the carpet removed from have had the lead sandwiched underlay fitted to the bulkhead and wheel arches.

Hopefully I will get my car finished by the time Stoneleigh takes place and I'd be happy to do mods to other people's cars who like what I'm doing/done including carpets.
