BMW K series cylinder head conversion

Hi,

I think BMW uses inlet rubbers to carry injectors.
So, if you can make GSXR 600 to work, it might be OK.
I have about 5 different setups but one of them come with Injectors built in like GSXR600.
I think you need to find out what BMW cylinder head is like first. If it has injector holes in the cylinder head, you can use that for your injectors.
I don't know much about BMW cylinder head as I went full engine conversion instead.

You can have an air box for postage cost as I don't need them!
If you need flanges cut, send me gasket and I will get it laser cut for you in your choice of material.

However I think on this occasion I'll let it go, and keep my eyes open for a 16 valve head, I think that would be more fun... :D

Have seen a few times a mini with a BMW head conversion racing at Anglesey, and spoke to the owner/builder,driver at some length. Said the conversion had cost him £8 1/2 K so far. My friend who has built several minis for circuit and grasstrack racing thought it was a lot of money, especially when a 1380 A series beat it several times that weekend!

It's all somewhat academical to me just now, as I've not got anywhere near that much money to spend on it, more like £85 than £8500! My idea was to try and find a spare A+ engine so I'm not working on the only engine I have for the car, which is currently running OK anyway, and work on the spare engine as and when money and time are available.

On that subject, does anyone have a spare A+ engine they'd be willing to sell? I'm still kicking myself for giving one away for nothing, about 3 years ago - although that one was a bit of an oil burner...

I dont think it would cost 8.5k to knock up a BMW k engine. Especially if you undertake some of the work yourself. More like a grand or so.

K heads cost about - £2-300

Motorbike throttle bodies (if they dont come with the K head) £60-£100

Megasquirt - £200

Coil and edis bits - £40

Fuel pump bits - £100

A bit of alloy welding to plug up some holes and a head skim - £100

Force racing K head kit - £540 http://www.force-racing.co.uk/bmw-k-100-conversion-kits/
Piston pocket machining - £50
Jackshaft - use existing cam or get an old one machined down on a lathe - £peanuts.

It all depends on how far you want to go with it. If you were needing to race it and want the best advantage you can get then you will need to put a steel bottom end in and a matching gearbox then yes you can get to these figures, but for a hobby car which goes on the road and is only booted now and again I'm sure a vanilla k head kit will do.

David, many thanks for taking the trouble of doing a ballpark costing, it's made me stop and think. I knew this wasn't a straightforward head swap, but when you look at all the work involved, I think I'll wait till I can get hold of a 16 valve head and work with that. Even if I were to get hold of a head now, I wouldn't be able to start working on it for a month or two...

Is it not odd that there's no option to bid up to the BIN price?

I think I'm going to have to put this idea on hold for now. Our bathroom upgrade is costing more by the day, and sometimes you just have to be sensible with your money. I think I get more brownie points for spending it on wallpaper and cushion vinyl than on shiny oily engine parts...

No probs.

I think the break down I have given is pretty realistic to the costs involved for a K Head. Only thing I might have missed is a trigger wheel, but you can make one of them up with some tin snips and a bit of tin if push comes to shove.

The costs involved for a KAD headed engine are in a different ball game altogether if you want to do it properly.....mind you, the results are spectacular.

I'd though of an empty cereal packet and a pair of nail clippers...
