Midas Gold Convertible with Hard Top Unbuilt

Postby Marie » Mon Feb 29, 2016 7:11 pm

In our garage we have what I understand to be a Midas Gold Convertible with a hard top. My Dad bought it more years ago than I care to count, dismantled the donor car, assembled the back end, started work on the front and then life took him off in various other directions and nothing more has been done to it.

We had a bit of a sort out at the end of last summer and gathered together all the relevant parts that we could find. We now have an unassembled car full of assorted parts, plus the engine/gearbox/etc assembly from the donor car. Dad is now in his eighties and has no interest in working on the car, so I have been charged with trying to find someone that would like it.

I contacted Tony Moss recently and he tells me that it's probably worth somewhere between £450 and £600. He pointed me here to the forums to see if any one might be interested in it and would be prepared to make sensible offer for it.

I'm no expert on these cars, as you've probably already guessed, but if you have questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

ETA: We're near Saffron Walden in Essex, btw.

Looks like a good project car with quality components. I hope it finds a good home. But I do think it's worth much more than Tony's guess. I have the feeling it's at least worth double that.

I'm eager for this the car to go now, and I'm thinking about listing it on eBay. So, if anyone wants to make an offer, even a silly one, ('cos I'm sure that's what I'll hear from eBay), please go ahead and do so! I'm willing to listen to anything even half reasonable.

Maybe it's possible for the Midas clubstand at Stoneleigh to have a bulletin board at or in the tent (depending on the weather) with a Midas wanted and a Midas for sale section. If possible you could put an advertisement on it. Anyone walking by the Midas stand and interested in a Midas could immediately check the Midasses for sale. Would be a perfect spot to sell the car and it's already next week.

Is it still available? There is someone I know local to me that might be interested

The board in the marquee at Stoneleigh is a good idea Hans though I have to say that mostly it's club members who already have cars that frequent it usually in search of chicken legs and burgers ;-) There's no reason at all though why we shouldn't have a board of wanted and for sale cars at all the events though.

A few more photos and some answers to PM questions that are becoming FAQs ;c)

Interior: apart from a rollcage, there are no parts for the interior.

Glass
There are windows and winders in the doors, apparently these were fitted at the factory before it was shipped.
There is a rear screen (unfitted).
There is no front screen.

Other Parts: I have not come across any new parts. It looks like everything came from the donor car. Given that it has been in our garage for about twenty years, I think it might be best to view it as a barn find. There are quite a lot of bits and pieces, but until it's in your possession and you're able to go through them all, it's hard to tell what's going to be really useful and what is not.

Engine and gearbox
I have been unable to find out what size the engine is. I thought I might come across the V5 from the donor car, but I haven't found it as yet.
With regard to condition, it's been here twenty years like the kit. Apparently the donor car had only done about 27,000 miles; Dad says he drove it before it was dismantled and it ran nicely.

On the positive side: there is a set of alloy wheels for it. Two have tyres on, but the other three look like they are brand new and have never even had tyres fitted.

And now, more photos....
