first time midas owners

Postby paulr » Mon May 17, 2010 8:49 pm

hello - well having admired Midas' from afar for 30 years we have this weekend got our first midas - lovely gold mk 3 coupe which we collected from north yorkshire this weekend and drove (or to be exact Sarah drove) all the way home to sussex on the south coast where she (the midas!) is now safely tucked up and newly washed .

got a few jobs to sort out which may well be asking for forum guidance on and hope other owners might be able to guide us - so far we have got to fix the undertrays which came home in the family c max as have not yet been fitted to midas, heater does not appear to blow any hot air (air yes but hot no) , fuel gauge and temperature gauge don't work - have now started researching on this forum and will aim to tackle each of these jobs one by one ,

first impressions of our midas (and she is the first and only one we have driven ) - love the space and individual styling - looks great on the road and easy and pleasant to drive (and compared to our previous caterham 7 oh so roomy and luxurious ) - in drive back down the motorways with no working fuel gauge very pleasantly surprised to see that she seemed to have been doing about 45mpg and best of all didn't miss a beat all the way home despite having been off road for some while prior to our buying her ,

Hi Paul,
Welcome to the forum. I hope you enjoy the ownership of your Midas.
Concerning the heater, if it's not clogged, it will be air. One hose is coming from the head of the engine and -being the highest point- collects all air. It's a pig to bleed because the coolant reservoir sits lower, but Ed has a simple solution on his coupe. Almost every manufacturer (also on the Rover 100) have small bleed valves in those hoses. He installed one in the long heater hose and bleeding is now as simple as on a central heating system.
Cheers, Hans

I agree with Hans about heater.

I also put a bleed valve (basically a t piece with a blanking plug in it at the highest point of the hose. Only takes a second to bleed.

Other reason is because people use rad weld or other similar product to fix a leaking radiator (a big no no). This fixes radiator great, but 'fixes' the finer matrix of the heater too!
