Steering wheel

Postby Geoff Butcher » Fri Jan 03, 2014 12:40 pm

Just wondered what size wheel most people use. I was going to buy a new Moto Lita, but the one I want only comes as a 14", whereas my scruffy old Mountney is 13".

I use the 3 Spoke Mini / pre '84 Mk1 Metro wheel on both mine, I previously had a Metro GTI one fitted but the Mini wheel gave me a little more knee room particularly in the convertible.

I imagine that most Midas owners have 13" steering wheels as that was the standard MG Metro size and also on the Rover Metro GTi. This is based on the convention of using the mean diameter - i.e. centreline of the rim.
Some manufacturers use the outside diameter as the quoted size, so one manufacturer's 13" wheel can be smaller than another's. Also, if they use the centreline convention, then a thin wooden rimmed 14" wheel may have the same OD as thick leather rimmed 13" wheel.

Your best bet is to measure the OD of your existing wheel and find out the true OD of the one that you want to buy and then see how it would fit and whether you can live with the clearance.

I've got a wood rim Momo on mine and I really like it, which is odd as I'd never considered a wooden rim as an option (it was fitted when I bought the car).
