joining the club

Postby billybob » Mon Jun 08, 2015 7:55 am

Hi all,

just purchased a Midas gold, never had one before and want to join the club.

Is it just a case of filling out the printable form and posting or is there a way to join online?
I want to sort this out pretty quickly so that I can insure the car and drive it home legally. Is a membership number required to insure through footman james and also is footman james the best company to go through for a 28 year old? I have seen that on thr form there is a space for the membership number, but I don't have this yet, am I being a numpty?!

Thanks all, looking forward to owning and driving the miniature beast! :D

Bit unfortunate in the timing stakes this at the moment sadly as the Membership Secretary has just passed away from a rather rapid cancer so please bear with things.

Probably the best advice I can give you at the moment is to drop Michael Horsley, the club's treasurer a line (his forum ID is Cortezkeeper memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=84 )

The committee are a bit old world and not the most skilled in the IT department, which I know they will quickly confirm themselves.

There's several insurance companies that will happily give discounts to the Club Members and often they will only need the membership number when you do the confirmation return paperwork they need once they have issued you the initial temporary cover notice.

Hope this helps in the meantime and welcome to Midas ownership they are great little cars and the Gold is a favourite of many

Hi Billybob,

As Kelvin said, sadly we have just lost David Johnson the membership secretary to cancer so please don't send the form to the address given at the top. However, I wouldn't suggest contacting Michael Horsley as he is currently on holiday.
Tony Moss, the club secretary, is also on the holiday this week, but will be back home next weekend and has requested that until further notice, forms should be sent to him at 23 Birchfield Road, Coundon, Coventry, CV6 2BB.
I'm hoping that in the future we can bring in a system where members can sign up online, but for now the form can be downloaded from the Membership page of the main Midas Owners Club website.
http://midasownersclub.co.uk/membership/

I notice that only the link at the bottom of that page seems to be working currently.

In the meantime I would suggest getting as many quotes for insurance as you can as there is quite a range of kit car policies available now and you need to find the one that suits you best.

Keep a copy of your membership application form as most insurers will accept that as proof of membership if you haven’t got your membership number back. Most of the kit car specialists offer discounts to club members even when they don’t have anything formally in place with the club - Insurance companies have found that car enthusiasts who join owners clubs make fewer claims, or smaller claims.

Apart from your age, where you live and where the car is kept, the factor that will make the biggest difference to kit car insurance is how you will use it. If it is your main car and you expect to do more than 10000 miles a year, and some Midas owners do, then expect to pay more than someone who has insurance on another car and does less than 6000miles a year. In fact that may define which insurance company you go with as some only offer limited mileage policies.

If you go for an agreed value insurance then the club can help with the valuation, if required. I would recommend not undervaluing your car, as that will only save a few pounds off the premium and could cost you dearly if you have to make a claim. In fact, if your car is particularly good it is worth basing the value on the true replacement cost rather than the market value. Our cars are undervalued as it is, despite being rare. If your car is a well kept example you will probably have difficulty finding one of a similar standard. Then you will need to consider what it would cost to bring one up to the standard of yours, or build from new.
For example, if your car has a 1380cc engine then you would be looking at spending £2.5-3k to replace that alone. A new kit is £5k, respraying an old shell is £2k -2.5k (any less and the primer coats will have been skimped on). Trim to that standard that Harold Dermott supplied would cost around £2k these days. It soon adds up.

Footman James and Adrian Flux both give Midas Owners Club members a discount so I would start with them:

https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/kit-cars/

I would also try the following kit car specialists:
MSM insurance: http://msminsurance.co.uk/personal-insu ... specialist
Osborne and Sons: http://www.kitcarinsurance.co.uk/
Graham Sykes: http://graham-sykes.co.uk/kitcar-insurance/
Peter S Taylor &Co (Bishop Calway): https://www.bishopcalway.co.uk/product/kit_cars
Peter James insurance: http://peterjamesinsurance.co.uk/index. ... ca-vehicle

Finally, I would suggest keeping a note of the best quotes for next year. Insurance companies no longer reward loyalty, preferring to buy in new customers with discounts. So it now pays to shop around every year.

Aww man that's really sad, thanks for letting me know and for the quick responses. I tried to reply to this earlier but it didn't work for some reason.

The insurance I went for ( adrian flux )said they need a members number eventually but there isn't such a rush which helps. I will send the form off in due cause, is everyone in agreement that tony is he best person to send it too? Would be good to know if anyone else done this as well.

Thanks!
