British Race Festival 2015 October 4th, Zandvoort

Postby Hans Efde » Sun Oct 04, 2015 8:25 pm

Went today with Peter Camping as a passenger in his red convertible. Green coupe was brought in by new owner Ernst van Eldik whom has done a sterling job bringing the neglected car back to life. Rolf Roozenboom came with his Quantum roadster. The BRF is back after an absence of 5 or 6 years. Small event this time, but also enjoyable and very friendly. Nice weather and a few interesting races. Hope the Zandvoort circuit continues the BRF event and who knows it will gain momentum again. Enjoy the pics.

I really like the Coupe in green. Is that painted, or an original gel coat colour?

Original gelcoat. Previous owner had the car outside and the gelcoat was completely faded. But with a bit of spit and polish it looks like new. Also lots of detailing, painted rear "Dodd" light clusters, bonded in rear windows and other small stuff. Car needs new carpet and possibly new seats, but for the rest is like new.

Another thing strikes me. Do you know what size the wheel and tyre combination is? To me, the wheels look bigger than 13". Could they be 14", or even 15"?

No just 13 inch. Checked them yesterday myself, because I am looking for new tyres and want something else than 175/50R13. But these were Dunlops 175/50 R13 on the factory supplied Revolution rims. Maybe they look bigger because the whole rim is painted.

I am thinking to buy 175/60 13. I have bad experiences with Toyo in that size because they would chafe the wheelarch under heavy load. But I have fitted upstops now on the rear suspension so chafing should no longer be possible.

The green coupe is stunning, the bonded side windows look much neater.

There are quite a few 175/60 tyres, these caught my eye given the price https://www.tyreleader.co.uk/car-tyres/ ... -77h-49955

yes 165/60 R13 vanished, 175/50 R13 very rare, but 175/60 R13 is produced by at least 5 brands. The Toyo's were too soft, so am looking for a stiffer tyre. 2cm increased diameter (compared to my Bridgestone 175/50) will be great for motorway cruising. Although modding the valve train might be a good idea as well. I was surprised about the quietness of Peter's standard engine, compared to my tuned engine. I have a stage 2 head with double spring valves, 1.5 rockers and triple cam chain. Nice to have a bit more oomph, but my ears start to bleed after driving this car for 2 hours on the highway.

I've just found someone selling tyres in 165/60 R13 size. Never heard of the make, though...
