MKII suzuki 1300 gti 16 v conversion

Postby ilmung » Wed Sep 21, 2016 6:17 am

I have started the project to put a suzuki gti 1300 16 v engine in my Midas MKII
I will use an Allspeed frontsubframe +driveshafts etc....
But the Allspeed subframe is solid mounted to the body (no rubber mounted ),could this give any problem of stressing the fiberglass at the contactpoints body/subframe ??
Are the subframe pickup points in the Midas ( contactpoints subframe to body ) renforced with steel or just fiberglass ??
Has anyone experience or suggestions to solve this or to make this pickup points stronger ???

Just fibreglass and they are mighty strong. There should be a sort of rubber mount in between the subframe and the body, but I suppose all cars have that. If you use the same points I can't see why it shouldn't work.

I wouldn't worry about the strength of the shell. Also note the Allspeed frame has the solid lower top bushes built in.

You'll come across 3 issues.

1 The inside rear corners of the subframe towers will hit the shell as the Midas shell is different than a Mini shell in that area, that's because the Allspeed towers are squarer than standard Mini towers.

2 The rear lower subframe legs won't sit flush with the heel-board of the Midas, that's because the Midas bulkhead is slightly different than a Mini one.

3 The front mounts are a lot higher than a standard Mini's mounts, so a bracket will be needed to bridge the gap.

Hi Stuart
This are important remarks , certainly point 1 and 2 !?
Do you think there's a possibilty to solve them ?

You could trim a little off the corner of the subframe, or grind away the shell in that area, it's that thick that you can gain clearance without going right through, you could add extra glass inside the car. There was a Midas Allspeed Honda build and he got away with a very minor trim to the subframe.

I'd be tempted to ask Rob to leave the rear legs off, then you can then bolt those to the floor and tack them to the rear of the carefully aligned subframe, then remove and weld fully.

Mine was for a Vauxhall engine, but I had a change of plan due to health issues and sold the subframe.

Hi Stuart
I have asked Rob if he could adapt the towers (make them less squarer) and leave the rear legs off , wait for his reply .
The pictures you send me ; is this a allspeed subframe and is the car a midas MKII ?

PS : Do you know Rob ?

Yes that's an Allspeed Vauxhall C16 frame in a Midas MK2. I've known Rob for over 20 years, he's a nice decent man. I imagine he'll remember the issues I experienced with the Midas.

It's these top corners that hit the shell.

Now it's 100% clear for me , thanks !
If you place the rubber cone inside the tower and you look how much clearence you have between the cone and the wall ( at the inside of the tower) maybe
than I can adapt/ reduce the corner of the tower at that place , seems this action correct to you ?
The part I should take away ....is that a big part ...can you give me an idea ?

It's only millimetres, perhaps best to try the frame in the shell first to see. If I get chance I'll try and get a photo of the inside of my wheel-arch where I ground it for clearance.
Mini frame for comparison.

Wonder never cease :a total unkwown and very kindly person explained me how to build the subframe for the suzuki gti conversion / Midas MKII :)
He even gives me his mould and an adapted Allspeedsubframe for a mini classic conversion , I can hold the mould for +- 8 weeks ,this must go !
I will use the mini classic towers and build around the tubes for the engine fixingpoints ,etc.....
So I can build the subframe by myself now .
like Stuart mentionned already , I have just to adapt :
1° the rear lower subframe legs to the body
2° the front mounts to the body .

It do not underrate the job ,but with the help of the Midas forum members ,I expect to finish before the summerholydays 2017 .
