At last I managed to get some oil pressure; I removed the banjo bolt from the oil feed pipe under No 4 plug and filled the aperture with oil, turned the engine backward a couple of turns, refilled the aperture, and turned the engine over on the starter with the plugs out. After about 5 seconds (although it felt like more), the light went out. I fitted new plugs (all the same this time, not 3 and an odd one!), leads on, turn the key - and it ran.

Now to tackle all the other jobs......including (but not limited to):
get the wipers to park
fit wiper delay relay into the circuit
fit the seats PROPERLY (ie, without using Perspex for one of the mounting brackets)
reset the rear window (back edge touches the body)
get some carpets
try to get meaningful readings on the fuel and temperature gauges
fit the same size tyres on all 4 wheels
pump up front suspension
raise the rear suspension
make,fit, and wire a towbar
clean and polish
