Quick shift gear lever

Postby axshack » Wed Apr 06, 2016 4:16 pm

Hi all,
I am going to fit one of these - mainly so the gear lever clears the instrument pod I built as the centre console !

Does anyone know if the the two pins that hold the gear stick ball joint in place can be drifted out, and if so, which way (inside out, or outside in)

the new gear shifter had two grub screws that obviously have to located where these pins are, so they have to come out !! :)

It's years since I fitted mine but I'm 99% sure that you just drift out the locating pins.

I agree, but I think they are tapered and look like you have to knock them out from the inside...just how you do that escapes me at the moment !!

heat the housing up and pull them with some pliers.....just watch for the grease that will ooze out if it's in the state mine was in

I drilled two holes in the tunnel and drifted them from the outside.
After a bit of a fight I finally got the new housing to line up with the holes and engaged the grub screws....and could not get gears 1 and 2 only 3, 4 and reverse....not sure what is amiss there, but I put the old system back while I think about it !! :)

Had a chat with MiniSpares (who sold me the quickshift system.....apart from the housing not seating correctly (checked and fettled), they can offer no other ideas why I cannot engage all the gears !

Anybody else fitted one of these? If so, what was the trick to get it right?

Cheers

mate had 1 and the nylon ball was too big so wasn't sitting in the rod right which stopped it selecting all gears. Ended up using some wet and dry to sand the ball down till it sat in properly. I find them notchy anyway compared to the standard 1 so in the midas I just chopped off a chunk of the stick and then bent the top slightly to get it where I wanted it

Quick shifts also wear the socket out in the shifter much faster than a standard/shortened BL linkage so a liberal dollop of thick grease in the linkage may be a helpful once you have worked out your selection issues.
