The shift on the kit is supposed to be extended, presumably to avoid these issues. Mine is still standard length, so gets close to the dash without the quick shift kit fitted.

The MK3 was designed to require 62 mm added to the length of the two rods, that still left the lever too far forward, bending the lever helped, that could be the difference.
