I mentioned to Alistair I was considering fitting EPAS...he suggested investigating an MGF system.
I now have a complete MGF Steering column, ECU, Steering wheel (and AIRBAG). I have dispensed with the wheel and stalks and am now considering the wiring diagram for this system in the MGF.

I forsee a snag that might be a game stopper: how to provide the "ROAD SPEED SIGNAL" from a "SPEED TRANSDUCER" also, how to provide the "ENGINE SPEED SIGNAL"

Has anyone else had a go at this who can give me some pointers?

No problem, you're lucky I remembered it, my memory is terrible at times these days.

There are a number of companies supplying electrical steering systems for classic cars. Might be interesting to find out how their systems work and perhaps they can supply easy bolt on sensors to make your system work.

If memory serves people used corsa b steering columns on minis to add power steering. I once had a mk2 midas which had a steering rack from front a BMW mini (I think) it had an electric powered hydraulic pump, it was noisey and took all the feel out of the steering so it had to go. As for signals, toothed wheel on the crank pulley for engine speed and toothed ring around either the pother joint or the outer cv joint. Try Renault clio abs ring as they are quite low profile

There is a story in the current Quantum owners magazine from someone who had an electric system fitted by a company called EasySteer. Sorry don't have a website address. The system has an accessible control to vary the amount of assistance and also still allows normal unassisted steering in the event of an electrical failure.

there are a number of "black boxes" around for the Corsa B systems to simulate the engine and road speed signal inputs they need.

I have not yet found anything similar for the MGF system, but am still on the hunt.

I do have one of the Corsa B boxes, and, if I can get a copy of the spec and wiring diagram, I might be able to use it on the MGF system..maybe!

On a related note: I have removed the MGF steering wheel and also removed the airbag module which forms part of the centre of the wheel.
Question: If I need to use the wheel in my Midas, does anybody know if it would be possible to safely remove the airbag from behind the trim?

Of course, I would have to cover up the SRS logo to use it because i understand that it is an MOT failure to have a non-functioning airbag - even though the car is unable to actually fire the bag in the event of a collision !!!

This job is getting complicated !!

Hi the mgf uses the same splines as a mpi mini so you should be able to go to moto-lita or a mini specialist like minisport and use one of these I know this as I fitted a mgf steering wheel to the wife's mpi mini
