rattling exhaust ball joint

Postby mikeeskriett » Wed Mar 23, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi All,

I'm tidying up the convertible ready to be seen in public and I've got a terrific rattle from the ball joint in the front of the exhaust. Now I know this was put in to take up the movement in the engine as there is less movement in the mounts on a Midas compared to the donor Metro. The ball joint either wears or the back of the ball shrinks down and becomes loose. I'm thinking about replacing it with a braided flexi joint instead.

What are your experiences what do you folks use or is your exhaust solid?

Cheers,

Mike

The flexible one sounds best to me

a shame they didn't spring load the original

Perhaps the jetex stuff is all too big, with 1.75" dia the smallest

I've still go the ball joint on mine, the only problem I have with it is that it seizes up and needs freeing off every time I take the exhaust off.

On the advice of my supplier, I stopped using the ball joint about five years ago and replaced it with a flexible coupling similar to Stuart's first photo.
The ball joints wear, as Mike describes, and are also more vulnerable to damage than the flexible coupling.

Hi Mike,
I just removed my turbo and exhaust and noted that my ball joint won't rattle because the previous owner had welded hooks on the exhaust and fitted 2 springs over it. I thought this was standard but apparently not.
