Today I completed the mods on my subframe. It just needs another lick of black gloss paint and then I can start installing the suspension.
I've followed David's path to convert the hydragas to springs. But on advise of Alan I put the springs a bit higher. This gives more adjustment of the springs and it's now possible to pop them in by hand. A local machine shop milled 2 bushes for me, 4cm high. They drop over the flange on top of the turret, so in total the spring sits 2 cm higher.
Another small mod is the towing eye. The exisiting towing eyes on the subframe are covered by the front bumper so I bent a piece of rod and welded it on the towing eye. It's 8cm lower, this should expose 4cm of the new towing eye below the car. I had it on my first Midas as well, very simple but effective. Only drawback is that it may bang against something occasionally.
Another solution would be what Peter Hills had. He had made a complicated bracket bolted the subframe. It stuck out the front bumper just below the indicator light.
