tyres tyres tyres

Postby billybob » Sun Jun 14, 2015 10:21 am

Hi all,

my car has midas wheels, the size is 165/60/13

it seems that they are nearly impossible to get hold of new....

is it safe to fit a 175/60/13? These are much more common but I am unsure of the implications.

Thanks!

My wheels are 13x5.5j I use 175/50/13 I have also used 175/60/13, both clear the arches with room to spare. The difference in diameter between the two is only about 12mm so won't have much effect on Speedo or gearing either.

I've used 185 55s before now but required a bit of grinding under the front arches by the wheel well to get full lock. 175 50s are good and a decent amount of choice

I have 165/65 13 on my Excelsior. When SVA'd the speedo was exactly right. According to a tyre chart I have from a Toyo brochure, both 165/60 and 185/50 are a smaller diameter and will over-read by about 2.5%. 175/60 is only fractionally smaller than 165/65

all very helpful,
it is great that the forum is so active....

I ended up going for 165/65/13 as this is what was in stock and is the same width as the back.. hasn't made an appreciable difference to the speedo according to the satnav- thought it might make it read a little low but I guess speedo accuracy wasn't amazing in the first place.

I think next time it needs new ones I will go for 175's.

the car is bonkers...never driven anything quite like it!

They are superb aren't they I love driving mine and I've driven some top notch cars including the Deronda many times and I used to own a Lotus Excel. It's no surprise that Gordon Murray rated it highly and that Lotus even took a look at the Midas too. At some point or other I may start to look at track day tyres but for road use the cars are simply amazing even on olde worlde 165s
