cortez cam belt change

Postby Jin » Thu Sep 04, 2014 10:14 am

Ok so deciding i cant live with the whining of the (presumed) cambelt and associated gubbins any longer I’ve decided now to change the cam belt

Before i pencil it in as a couple of hours job is there anything daft that needs to happen to do the change inc water pump?
i haven’t got to remove the engine or anything?
Space looks tight down there.
any tips or advice gratefully received

Thanks in advance

A lot of the K series belt change kits come with a new water pump and tensioner which seems like a plan on an engine with cooling issues. I'll certainly be doing the lot on the GTM.

Yes good idea. I had a Rover 214 GSI. The waterpump would do only 40K km's, so I had the belt replaced including the waterpump.

Another MK4 owner says its a bit of a pig to do because the inner wing on the Midas isn't the same as on a Metro because it is closer to the engine.

I forget the details now, I seem to remember that the engine mount has to come off, not unusual I know, some have studs and some have bolts I think.

It was Mike with the orange one that told me, I can PM you his number if you like? I'm sure he wouldn't mind, he enjoys talking about all aspects of the MK4.

Many thanks mate
I've had a quote for £125 from rover mobile mechanics, I've sent him photos of access and its a fixed price,
The kit + pump will set me back over 50 quid so im just weighing up the pros and cons...

Jin,

Did you use the mobile mechanic for the belt change in the end? And if so did they manage to do it OK on the Mk4 without dropping the subframe or anything as drastic?

I’ve taken a few bits off to get to the point I could start on the head gasket, belts and bump on mine 1.4 GTi based one, but it looks like a pig to do tbh.

Hi.
Yes I did use them and although not as easy they did manage it.
I removed the bonnet and headlight prior just to make life easier for them and I wanted to avoid them getting damage.

Cool, thanks for the reply.

I’ve taken some pics of access, as you did, and will contact them for a quote I think. Plenty of other jobs to get it back on the road that I shall try and spare myself this particular hassle.

The bonnet, headlights and front bumper moulding are all off - so it’s hopefully as easy access as they’ll get.
