National Metro and Mini Show - June 5th - Gaydon

Postby ACourtney » Wed May 25, 2016 9:26 am

Just one week after visiting Gaydon for the Festival of Transport, the club will return for this new event.

This is the first event that I can think of that is targeted at Metros (as well as Minis and BMW MINIs).

It will be interesting to see how many Austin and MG Metros turn up, especially as just a couple of years back the naysayers were claiming that there were just around 30 of them still on the road. That claim was based on figures found on http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk, which has revised the figures upwards now to a more believable 500 or so Austins on the road, with around 1400 on SORN and around 140 MG Metros taxed, with 460ish on SORN. So not many more MG Metros running than all the various Midas models, but then again rust is less of an issue for a Midas!

The howmanyleft website doesn't list the Midas separately (we get lumped into Other British), yet it lists other obscurities such as Wiesmann (2) and Praga (2 taxed, 4 sorn), so perhaps we should start to lobby the site to list the Midas marque. (Have I veered off topic? ;) )

The show starts at 10.00am and the club has booked a pitch. Tony still has two or three entry passes (free to members and includes entry to the museum) and he can be contacted on 07850917392.

A small bunch of Midas Owners visited Gaydon and were treated to an excellent day out for the second week in a row. This time the sun shone more brightly and the Gaydon car park was buzzing with Metros and Minis, rather than busses and tanks.

Tony had booked us in the same location, right between the museum entrance and the collections entrance. So we didn't have far to walk to look around and there was plenty to look at outside too.

As well as lots of Minis and Mini variants, there were plenty of Metros too. A 6R4 replica featuring a Saab turbo engine in the back caught the eye. It may not have 4WD like the original 6R4 - and a real ex- Tony Pond, Computervision, works car can be seen in the museum - but it was a neatly executed conversion. There were also some interesting Austin Rover prototypes to be seen in the collections hall, from a booted Metro and a Metro van with a K-series engine in the back (disguised MGF test-bed) to the ECV3 lightweight experimental car of the 1980s. Then there is the Jaguar collection downstairs, including two XJ220s (one the original show car with the V12 engine, the other a pre-production model with the twin-turbo V6).
I could go on.

This is still a relatively new show, but its relevance to all the Midas models couldn't be plainer, so lets hope that it continues to grow and that the club gets invited back next year.
