Thanks Alistair.
There's an awful lot going on in and around the car on the move like you say.
If I understand it correctly the roof vents positioned to the front facing forward are to draw air in and those positioned to the rear facing backwards (although more rare) serve to draw air out the car which is what I want.
Just need to find one I like the look of that doesn't cost a grand :D

got it by searching 'typical air pressure zones on passenger cars'
Searching images of typical 70'and 80's saloons on google it looks as if the rear 'C' pillar is a place to extract air. The Vauxhall Chevette is a good example.
