That's the kiddie, there are two versions a 2 pin spade type connector version and a later 3 pin waterproof plug. Off the top of my head the same module was also used on mk3/4 escorts.

thanks all - son has borrowed ruby for past 2 weeks whilst his volvo playing up (bit of a contrast) and hasn't experienced the fade at all - will have a look at dizzy and module and might swap it anyhow (can't do any harm to have a spare)

have heat wrapped exhaust so time will now tell if a cure or not

thanks

got to chuckle - 2 weeks of borrowing midas and son is now keen on having a "fun car" himself and as volvo still not sorted is wanting to borrow Ruby for a while longer - his preferred choice compared to wifes modern hatch with aircon etc etc - these funny little cars can get under your skin - Jon every day he has borrowed car seems to come back with stories of people coming upto him in carpark (at his work) and being fascinated by Ruby

heat wrap fitted but at weekend (and wow was it hot!) Jon experienced for first time the power fade - will get module first and if that doesn't solve it might tray Hans solution with air duct - Hans do you by any chance please have any photos of your ducting ?

thanks all

alternatively wait for resumption of normal weather!

If you have a standard engine, heat shouldn't be a problem, provided the mixture and timing is correct and the carb. heatshield is in place. Maybe the engine is running lean. My present car was giving me a headache because it was a turbo with lots of power. Now it's a normal aspirated lightly tuned engine with about 90bhp. I have the oilcooler and the oil stays steady at 75-100 degrees c. But the hole in the bumper also supplies air to the air filter just below the rh headlamp and another hose presently ends just inside the engine bay. But I am planning to reconnect it and then let it run around the block to the exhaust manifold. I don't like insulation wrapping because it causes metal fatigue in the exhaust.
I don't have pics on internet, but on my video's you can see the hoses:

They run behind the bumper and via holes I cut below the indicator lights enter the engine bay.

But again I suspect an electric failure in the coil or distributor as suggested earlier in this thread. Standard 1.1 and 1.3 engines hardly cause heat problems in a Midas.

Now that you have lots of alternative solutions I would suggest that you go back and re-read Rich's solution.

You are likely suffering from fuel vaporization in the supply line. Having had similar problems on my Convertible I replaced some four years ago the old mechanical pump with a Facet electric pump located under the bonnet but away from the manifold.

This does two important things, it improves the fuel flow under all conditions and there is no risk of the diaphragm rupturing and dumping fuel into the engine oil.

At the same time minimize the risk of an under bonnet fire by replacing the rubber fuel line with a rubber fuel line covered in metal woven armoring. This helps dissipate the heat and also prevents accidental damage to the rubber on the hot exhaust manifold. This tube is difficult to obtain but is available from Alistair at Alternative Cars.

have ordered electric pump - anyone know if necessary to remove mechanical fuel pump and if yes what do you use to blank over the hole?
was wondering if once electric pump in and fuel lines no longer connected to mechanical pump if any point in removing it ?
thanks all
