Fuel tank material spec?

Potentially daft question....

Are there any minimum specs (thickness etc) applied to the manufacture of petrol tanks? I'm considering making up a tank in sheet steel.

I can weld steel, alloy I blow holes in with the MIG and a TIG isn't an option.
