Mk2 rear axle

Postby centredonkey » Fri Aug 19, 2016 8:07 am

Hello again, folks.

Well, two years after first joining, and a move to the highlands to find decent workshop space, I am finally ready to attempt the resurrection of my son's MK2 Bronze.

The critical factor in deciding whether it is a viable project is the rear axle, basically it is shot to pieces, both wheels adopt alarming angles when the car is pushed around the barn.

So here is the question....what, if any, after market mini axle will fit, will it need modification, and does anyone have one? We will need radius arms too, in fact a whole rear axle set up would be ideal.

The rest of the car needs straight forward restoration...hopefully!!

BTW, after pulling off the driver's door trim we found "KCS (Kit Car Show???) prize" written in marker pen on the inside of the door skin. We know it was factory built, does anyone know if a Bronze was given away at any point?

Cheers.

I don't know about the 'Prize' but regarding the rear axle the Mini rear subframes won't go on. It's a bespoke rear beam. Given your location it may be worth speaking to Alan Donawhoo who does occasionally pop on the forum here. Mind you I am in Dorset so whilst Newcastle is close to you by my reconning it's all relative! ;-) Also speak to Alistair of course.

There's quite a few Midas with a need for rear beams I'm also in need too

I can only remember one competition involving a Midas as a prize (and this is history, which isn't my best subject, so apologies for any errors), which was won by Steve Pearce for designing the convertible. Could this be your son's car?

I have a photo of Steve's white mk2 at Sandown Park somewhere, he designed and added a rear spoiler.

Yes, that's the car, complete with rear spoiler!
Any chance of a copy of that photo, Stuart?
Is Steve Pearce on here?

I'll have to try and take a photo of the photo, I don't have a scanner. It dates from around 1989. To my knowledge Steve isn't on here.

I'd not spotted that the mk3 behind is a car I now own !

No worries, I guess that period was the hey day of Midas cars and the club, always big turn-outs.

My car sadly looks nothing like that any more after a life time out in the elements. How's yours fared?

None too well, Stuartyears outside near the sea has caused extensive corrosion to all exposed metal parts, even the bulkhead strengthening plate where the enginge steady bar attaches has crumbled.....any one got a spare?
