Forum URL renewal time

Just a note to let you know that the 'www.midascarsforum.com' URL is up for renewal shortly (next month)

It occurred to me to ask if anyone wanted to contribute to this. I have had a few kind offers in the past but never took them up.

What some of you might not know is that the web server is actually hosted on a dedicated rack mount server running in my office (in the garage next to my Midas Convertible!) Those midas forum users that have seen it will understand it likes a quite a lot of juice to keep it going.

Anyway, I thought about proposing a hall of fame area in the forum, listing names of people who have contributed to the Midas Cars Forum to make you feel warm inside.

No sweat if you don't want to. Just a thought as I have had offers in the past and its renewal time.

What level of donation have you in mind?

Currently I only subscribe financially to one site on the net, they ask £12 annually and have 12800 members (can't tell how many are paying the £12 though, but at a guess I'd say about 75%), but if you don't pay, you lose access to a lot of site functionality, including all the "for sale and wanted" kind of stuff, and private messaging. It's a motorbike forum, but once I manage to get my bike sold, I don't think I'll be giving them any more money.

I'm not asking for an amount.

Just giving people who asked to contribute in the past an opportunity to be a part of it if they want to.

Its as much or as little as you feel, and if that figure is nothing, then its nothing. Someone has already PM'd me and offered a fiver a year, so thats an example but not the final word.

I won't be putting amounts up against names.....just naming people who contributed. If anyone wants to ask in the future for an account of what I received though I will happily provide an account of receipts (but not names).

A FIVER!!!?

I'm not made of money...

Seriously though, I'm currently a bit skint, so wouldn't be able to offer much more than that. Might not be immediately either, so I wouldn't count on me for any financial contribution for a while. Sorry...

LOL, Like I said, no ones twisting your arm.

Entirely voluntary. If you don't want to, or can't, you don't have too.

A bit like an honesty box for hen eggs at side of road. We have a lot of them around here where I live.

Great, free eggs! Can you pick some up for me please? :D

Seriously though, I'll be happy to contribute once I have something to contribute with.

No probs. ;)

Mind you if we had 12800 subscribers and 75% subscribed £12 per annum I think we would have our own independent car company. As it is we have 220 ish so not a sniff!

On the forum I mentioned, it's a standing joke that the main job of the forum moderators is to crew the owner's yacht...

Hi sounds good.

Do you have a paypal account we could send some cash your way to? That way I could fire a little extra cash directly from the ebay sale of old stuff :)
Running 3 dell servers in my wardrobe I know the sparky bill adds up :)

HI Graeme, thanks for your offer.

our email address for paypal is: lvm_1975(a)yahoo.com the (a) symbol being an @ for spam reasons.

All donations greatfully received and I will put up your name on the Hall of Fame ;).

Yes your not wrong about the leccy bill. Thats actually been the main concern. I have dropped it down a touch now I have gotten rid of the uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) I had which was like running a 2.5 kw/h electric fire for 3 years but its still probably around 1kw/h. I even had it dropped down to running on a micro pc for a while but the performance was slow.

I noted with a lot of the mini forums for example that their server running costs are in the region of £70-£80 per month which explains why the have advertising and donation requests. Not something that gets picked up by the regular forum user. I'm happy to have the occasional outage for the sake of my leccy bill.
