Digital Dashboards?

Postby MrBounce » Sat Jul 30, 2011 9:22 pm

Having just cut out the dashboard on my Mk 1 project I have several ideas going through my head for a new dashboard. Given the prices of old/new analogue dials at autojumbles, what's the likelihood of easily fitting a digital dash to what is efffectively a 1981 plastic car with a 70's wiring loom?

My knowledge of electrics is not that great but hey you've got to learn sometime and I have a very useful friend who knows car electrics inside out so I should be able to get help fitting it. I'm sure with a bit of gentle persuasion and careful planning it can be made to work.

Has anyone fitted a digital dash? How easy/difficult is it?

Was thinking of one of these as it'll likely be cheaper than all the analogue dials: http://furoreproducts.co.uk/digital-spe ... peedo.html

Your thoughts?? :?:

I'm running a Koso dash and I like it, David is running an ETB.

Fitting really is as simple as locating the wires and switching them from the back of your old dash and onto the new one. I bought a couple of ATX connector blocks from Maplins to make up the dash connections.

The biggest problem was mounting the speed pick up, mine runs from the wheel stud heads in the rear drum. On the Metro studs there is a 'V' stamped in the head which caused some electrical confusion, filing or turning these flat fixed the problem.

Just one problem with the Koso dash was it's incompatibility with the Austin Rover fuel level sensor. In technical is a post I made about a guy who makes an alternative fuel gauge (LED) which is what I now use.
