Electronic, adjustable fuel gauge.

Postby Rich » Fri Mar 18, 2011 7:41 pm

A few of you will probably know that I've been without a fuel gauge since I binned the unreliable Metro dash and replaced it with a Koso all in one effort. The Metro fuel tank sender didn't like the Koso unit so I've just had to refuel every 150-200 miles to avoid running out.

One of the guys (Spiyda) on the 16v Mini Forum has a business making LED light units for Minis and Harleys and he's branched out into electronics, I've bought on of his adjustable fuel gauges (complete with anti-slosh circuit).

This is what you get..

As you can see there's a bunch of LEDS that you make up into your own gauge so after a bit of playing on the lathe I came up with this..

The dark circle is a piece of smoked plexiglass that I cut out with a hole saw so when fitted it looks like this..

The LEDs were stuck into the rear of the gauge with JBWeld and after a bit of faffing about fitted into the dash..

The red LED that shows empty is in the centre of the gauge and only lights when appropriate, the points where the full and empty lights come on are individually adjustable as it the brightness of the LEDs overall.

As you can see from his site, Chris has some good ideas and the nounce to get them into production, I believe he is working on digital tachometer and speedometer with odometer which means you could build a digital dash with your own design of front end. His website is >>here<<

Thanks Rich,

That's just what I need, my fuel gauge went wonky at the end of last season! Top quality work as per usual, thinking outside the box again.

No worries, I'd love to report that it's working but I can't as I promptly snapped a wheel stud when I was rotating the tyres so the car is off the road until the Postie does the business.
