A little progress to report, been up to the garages, managed to dig out a Rover 200 rear beam, removed callipers and discs. Interestingly the whole hub assembly bolts on to the radius arm.None of this pressing stub axles in and out.

I laid the disc and calliper inside the wheel and it seems to fit, but very snugly!

The disc fits over the wheel studs very easily, but that's because the Rover wheel studs are 12 mm diameter and the Metro wheel studs are about 10 mm diameter. Stuart mentioned that someone had trouble with the discs moving, so when I do the drawing for the laser cutting, I'll design a drilling jig and get that cut out as well and I'll just drill out a new set of holes to the correct wheel stud diameter and PCD. The disc which I drilled out was on a scooter and was very hard, but people tell me that I can drill car discs, so I'll give it a try, the proof is in the pudding.

I'm going out now to try and find some molasses, amongst other jobs. This Midas ownership is just one long adventure!!!

That's all I'll have time for this week, but will do some more next week.

I found molasses in a jar at a reform shop. It's even fair trade.

Parts are in for a week now but no effect yet.

I didn't manage to get any Molasses today, So I might revert back to vinegar for these Rover 200 callipers and discs. But I will try again tomorrow. it would be interesting to do a side by side test.

Molasses = black syrup (treacle) or horse feed. You can get horse feed from most serious animal food places.

You have to be patient with the Molasses but it really does work. I'll post some more photos shortly on the original thread. I'm amazed at the results I'm getting now. At first not much seems to happen but after a while you'll find the rust just washes away. It helps to rub it a bit with a scrubbing brush or even your fingers. 3 weeks is good but I am sure with a bit of agitation and warmer weather this would be shorter. Remeber to dilute the molasses 1 part molasses to 9 parts water.

Getting back to the original subject what is the conclusion what disc should be used for the rear? Rear discs of a Rover 200 or the non vented disk of the Metro? I think the diameter is not a big problem. If the centre hole needs to be milled for an diameter increase, at the same go the disc diameter could be decreased so the caliper would fit inside the wheel. But it would be nice to have the correct bolt holes and offset.

Hi Hans,

I'm working on the Rover 200 disc at the moment, because that is what was used on the Metropower conversions and that's what I've got in stock. I've not tried it on a rear hub as yet, but I will next week. From the pictures that Rich posted and the information on MP. It should fit without alteration, apart from re-drilling the PCD holes. I will confirm it all next week, when I can get some more garage time.

The Rover 200 disc is going to need some machining to fit. I'm only half interested in this as I actually prefer to have drums on the rear.

A quick look for a disc with a big enough centre hole found these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Brake-Di ... 416b455b45

I guess there must be discs out there that have the required 65mm ish hole (can someone else double check that on a rear hub of theirs please?)

This ebay seller has all the dimensions of discs http://stores.ebay.co.uk/gsfcarparts/Di ... m14&_pgn=8

Oh and I just realised the disc I tried must have been a Micra disc as I see the Vauxhall disc have a large centre hole.

Edit This looks about the best option perhaps http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Brake-Di ... 5895152de2

Same seller but cheaper :? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Rear-Brake-Di ... 4168bee8dc

and slightly cheaper http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Eicher-Rear-B ... 43ae972e56
