Undertrays

After several years of ownership I've finally (thanks to Chris Mahon), got and fitted a set of undertrays. I don't know whether it's my imagination but once over 50mph things certainly feel more planted and stable, turn in feels sharper which is a little unnerving at first.

I've yet to fit the side plates as I'm awaiting some riv-nuts and need to make a seating tool on the lathe to fit them, the undertrays themselves are fitted with the rubber well nuts used to secure motorcycle screens and fairings.

What are others feelings on the trays?

Yes I can concur on your findings although I found the effect on the coupe to be stronger. I've had my coupe on topspeed close to 190km/h and the car was extremely controllable. I once was on the left lane with 130km/h when I suddenly was confronted with a concrete barrier that was pushed by a truck from the other side on my lane. I steered around it with full speed and the tyres didn't even scream. It was if the car was on rails. Pretty amazing.
On the convertible the undertray effect is a bit spoiled by the weaker body and the worse aerodynamics. I've tried the topspeed with the top down on mine and it struggled to get faster than 150 km/h although the engine power was available. The suction and noise behind the windscreen was pretty awesome.

I'd love to fit a set of trays, I assume they are pretty hard to come by now?

Alistair has a set of moulds for undertrays for the MK3 so these are available. I believe he doesn't have moulds for mk2 undertrays.

If you could get sight of a set to get the idea I don't see why you couldn't cut some hardboard to shape and make a mould, or cut from a sheet of ally.

I imagine If i were making them from ally I would design my own, not a bad idea really!
Does anyone have any pictures of them? I remember they mount to the front splitter, and have a cut out for the 'box?

Are you talking mk 2 James? if so the only car I saw with just a rear undertray on was Mike Perkins, he made his own.

Hmmm rear undertray would be touch with current exhaust, one day would like to get that sorted though to somethinga bit more compact

Hi James,

Mike Perkins kindly leaned me the mould for his rear undertray for a Mk2 project we have in the workshop. Mike designed it around the original Midas exhaust system so there are no issues of it touching.

I don't have the original midas exhaust system and it hangs down a lot unfortunately, I will be changing to a single exit more compact (two small dual boxes) as soon as I get the car running again!
Do you have any photos of one fitted Alistair?
