sound proofing convertible

Postby Hans Efde » Wed Apr 01, 2009 7:29 pm

Can anyone give advise on soundproofing a Gold convertible? I removed all original GTM soundproofing from my convertible since that was a sort of horse blanket (well, it smelled that way). I recall in my first Gold coupe a soundproofing of 2 layers of foam with a sheet of lead in between.
The Convertible has a thick sandwich floor so the question is if I need something somewhere in the passenger compartment that would have an effect.
For sure I need something for the boot. At higher revs it seems to work as a resonance box for the exhaust. Has anyone experience with soundproofing in the boot. If yes what did you use? In the automotive industry they seem to use "leadplates" (one brand in överhaulin" used is "dynamat"), which is a sort of heavy bitumenplate that is selfsticking and sometimes also has an aluminium layer for heat protection. It is really heavy though, so preferably I would like to have a lighter alternative.

Hans, Unfortunately to stop noise transmission through a panel there is no alternative to weight. Most barrier mats are PVC loaded with barytes which is a very heavy mineral. These often have a foam backing. Google 'Sound Services Oxford' to see the kind of things which are available. You can also get materials designed to reduce panel vibration (such as bitumen) and acoustic foam which will absorb sound energy inside the cabin, although I don't think that'll be much good to you in a convertible!

Hi,
I have a convertable with a hard top, and it is very noisy with the top on.
Part of this is because the top is not lined. Perhaps some of the products mentioned would work for the hard top?
I looked at the link, and some of the foams sound good, but they are expensive, so rather than experiment, has anyone tried these?
Regards
Victor

Yes that's my problem too. I have a softtop, but it's noisier with the softtop on than driving open. The noise can't get away. But especially the boom boom noise from the exhaust is fatigueing. Would be nice to have that solved. Else I just have to keep on driving open!
