How on Gods green earth do you split the CV joints from the drive shafts?

The Haynes manual shows a 'special' tool but the explanation makes no sense to me at all.

....i've got the special tool.

Its a wedge that goes between output covers and the Inner CV.

Minispares sells them and they are very good.

Which joints? inner or outer?

Both are held in place by a circular circlip which will compress into its own groove. It's best to hold the shaft in a vice and then give the CV a sharp tap, tap the middle of the outer CV closest to the drive-shaft (I use a socket extension bar. something softer should really be used) and the metal tube bit on the outer one.

I think David misread your post :)

I think David is thinking of the tool that pulls the driveshaft out of the diff housing. The official tool is a sort of wedge shaped fork. My drive shafts just pulled out by hand, although in the past I have used 2 large screwdrivers or tire lifters for the stubborn ones.

ahhh yes you are right.

Sorry I was confused about that. Mine is black and wedged shaped. Great tool and doesnt damage the side covers like screwdrivers can. Been there done that.

Never seen a tool to disengage the splines off the CV except a BFH (big F**k Off Hammer) and a vice. But only in exceptional circumstances where CV has rusted on splines. Good reason to strip down the shaft every now and again!

Cheers,

D

Excellent! BFO adjustable spanners I can do.
