CARPET ADHESIVE REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT

The previous owner of my MK2 had removed all the carpet right up to window level, leaving patches of adhesive and "tufts" of carpet everywhere! I've tried acetone and autoglym tar remover with no success. The only thing which seems to work is a combination of scraping, bad language (!!) and lots of elbow grease! This dried contact adhesive is obviously over 20 years old, and is rock hard!

I'm worried about trying other random chemicals in case I damage the glassfibre.

Has anyone out there found a quick and easy solution to this problem???

Thanks,
Dave.

P.S. I've got the old carpet for templates, but not sure what to use as a replacement. Someone suggested self adhesive speaker box carpet which is used by the Customising and modified people? I have also considered proper glassfibre paint, although this will not be a very effective sound deadener and would probably cause condensation problems in damp weather!
Any suggestions gratefully received!!!

There's a spray called Sticky Stuff Remover, Homebase sells it in amongst the glued and paintstripper. It works really well.

Thanks for the tip Rich, that's one of the jobs I was scratching my head about too. My usual gallon of cheap thinners approach might be a bit harsh!!
