I'm lucky to have been taught a lot about vehicles by my father. He was a farmer but not one of those rich ones that everyone seems to know about! The consequence of that was that when any vehicle, tractor, farm implement, whatever, broke down, most of the time he had to fix it himself. He had served a mechanical apprenticeship at a steel foundry which is where he gained a lot of his knowledge, and I spent a lot of time watching him make and mend stuff in his workshop.

I was still living on the farm when I built my first Midas - it was an ideal place to do that, all indoors working on flat concrete floors, access to all the tools I needed, lifting gear to crane the car over the engine whenever I had to take it out to work on it, ramps whenever I had to work under it. Now I still have ramps and most of the tools, but nowhere to get the car indoors. At least when it rains the car keeps the rain off me!
