so that I can mount 360 gearbox direct to G13B Gti engine
So you're putting the Volvo gearbox at the front? or is that just the prop-carrier?

I had thought what a great idea using the Vovlo gearbox and diff in the back so you don't compromise foot-space in the front and give the back-end a bit of weight for traction and nice weight distribution.

What a great project! Have you thought about the exhaust? Is that running together with the prop shaft through the tunnel or is the exhaust going to the rear end via a different route?

Hi,
You got my idea then.
A111, you are looking at 340 gearbox. 360 has torque tube which has a solid prop shaft inside and I can hang exhaust from that.

I will be modifying mx-5 rear subframe and it will have kind of cage for both suspension as well as gearbox/diff.
I have thought about exhaust but I need to get hold of a subframe first.

MX-5 subframe can adjust camber and a double wish born setup.

An alternative setup could be to use the Alfa Romeo 75 or a few others in the Alfa range. These also has a rear mounted transaxle gearbox for weight distribution.

My 75 came with an LSD as standard too which could be a bonus. 2nd gear synchro is weak and usually knackered though.

Hi Rich,

I think Alfa will be good but they are getting rare to buy on ebay as well.
So I looked into Volvo as they are still cheap to buy.
Porsche... yeah right. I like cheap stuff, so Volvo will be good enough for me. I think my engine will be producing 220/40-ish bhp, I would like to be able to get hold of spares reasonably cheap. I hope I don't have to pay more than £2k to finish this project.

How cheap is cheap?

You can buy the entire car for a couple of hundred (I sold a taxed and MOT'd one recently for £300).

Ohhh, OK.
I bought my gearbox, torque tube, drive shafts and bell housing for £150 delivered.
I think it is smaller than 944 unit... but yes Porky gearbox might be nice but now I have Volvo gearbox so I go with it. I'm trying to arrange LSD for it.
I think it is too late now  !

Hi,

Been a while, I have been collecting my parts. A Friend was supposed to come over to see few things but he couldn't make it. So I worked on my idea instead.

As I have said before, I'm thinking of using modified MX-5 rear subframe. I took my gearbox out of my workshop and placed subframe over it.

It looks OK. I think track width (1510 with disc rotar) may be too wide though.

I fitted my 13" Hayashi Street just to check but it will fit bottom arm! So I have to have narrower wheels.
