Front bulkhead, that is between engine and habiticle, must be fireproofed (Construction and Use Act, anyway). Fuel tank must also be separate, with all gaps filled, remember intumescent putty?
The filler pipe, either metal or rubber (I have both versions) must be isolated. Your idea of larger diameter flex pipe (flexible gas flue pipe perhaps?) and sealed at both ends is perfectly satisfactory. One of my cars has a U-section grp moulding with returned edges which covers the filler pipe and secured with self-tap screws, thereby closing it off completely from habiticle. This moulding glassed in is also acceptable.
Please be aware that some metal braided fuel pipes do not have an infinite working life. I will not name the makes that are problematic, but some allow a strong smell of fuel through the rubber, especially with exotic fuels and high delivery pressures. Braided "plastic" pipe is just acceptable when new, but these tend to shrivel after a while, the braid can be felt more prominent, the pipe material changes colour, gets hard/brittle and gets loose under the pipe clip, even though the clip was securely tightened when fitted.
Fuel pipe through the habiticle must be metal or metal protected, be one piece or have screwed/compression joints: Jubilee/"O" clips/Oetiker clips are not allowed in such an installation.
Best regards,Ron

Ron, as usual many thanks again for your words of wisdom. I will report back in due course when I've had time to get "stuck in" to the Midas again! Unfortunately a few "domestic engineering" jobs and my sons' rallying activities seem to have taken priority again. See www.teamwoodspeed.com website!
Cheers, Dave.
