Bearing troubles

Hi, I've already posted this on the Metro forum, hoping someone can help me here..

My Midas is based on a Mk2 Metro, I recently replaced the nearside front bearing with a taper roller set which within the space of a few weeks were wrecked. The hub in the past has come loose after I'd changed a CV boot and not managed to tighten it up properly.

Assuming I'd damaged the drive flange (the C washer came out in bits) I've replaced it with a brand new item, new washer and new bearings. The car has done maybe 50 miles and the bearing is groaning again and there is discernible play.

I'm now wondering if I need to replace the CV joint itself? Any ideas??

Hi Rich,

How did you tighten up the taper rollers? What torque setting did you use......?

Hi David,

Despite having the distance piece in place it was as though it was missing so I assumed it was out of spec. The bearings were tightened as you would any other taper rollers, nipped up to remove play but still allow smooth rotation.

I once fitted new front wheel bearings in preparation for a MOT test.
I tightened them as tight as I could manage with my socket set but when tested they said that one of the bearings was loose and would be a failure.
When I told them that the bearings were brand new they showed me how to tighten them, firstly remove the tapered split washer and replace it with a flat faced washer, then tighten gorilla tight to squeeze the bearings into place. Next replace the flat washer with the taper washer and torque to specified limit (or as tight as you can get them).
I think that the tapered washer nips down onto the shaft as you tighten the nut so if the bearings are not really squeezed into place they will move a bit and allow too much play.
After tightening up the bearings this way the car passed it's MOT.

Dunno if this helps.
Regards Mark

Mark,

You may well have something there, the CV joint I just bought came with a flat washer that doesn't go anywhere on the assembly. I've had it all apart this evening and the bearings are ok so I'll give the flat washer a go tomorrow.

Cheers,

Rich

My old mini had horrendous bearing issues which I found was only solved by replacing the lot, hub bearings and Cv joint, never had an issue past that!
