Needing guidance

Postby Stairheedrammy » Mon Nov 07, 2011 9:33 pm

Here's a puzzle for you- all of my doors, windows and bonnet are locked and the lock mechanism has disconnected from the key barrell meaning I cant get into the car- my first thought is to advertise for a car thief to open it for me- any suggestions

Bit of wire with a hook or loop on the end, slipped down between the door frame and the body, and hook it onto the door lock button?

Or what about the rear window? Any way you can get that to release? With mine, you can push it down a few millimetres against the pressure of the seal - maybe a bit of bent wire horizontally might be able to pull the locking catch across out of its slot?

I am assuming you are talking about a coupe. No idea how you might get into a locked convertible, especially if the roof is up...

The rear window would be the obvious choice if you still have the keys. As far as I know it is impossible to lock the keys inside a Midas.

Unfortunately its an internal locking mechanism on the back window- looks like a bit of wire between the window rubber on the door and the rubber trim on the body- to try to shift the lockin button. Thanks Lads

The factory standard mechanism for the rear window would be a locking barrel with an S-shaped bracket that catches underneath a lip (usually a small metal strip bolted on the edge of the body, or even underneath the edge of the body). These locks are widely used and can be obtained (if not in the DIY store) from companies that build kitchens, lockers or even coach builders (where I got mine). They used these lock for storage bins on trucks and busses. To prevent rain getting in I usually put an anti-freeze cap on, available at Halfords.
One day I found my coupe completely closed in by a few assholes that wanted to be funny. Luckily I could climb in via the rear window and drive away.

The side windows in my Mk2 are held in with the windscreen type seal with an insert. I reckon if the insert was pulled out it would be quite easy to get the glass out without damage. Not very good for break-in prevention though. Mind you, you can turn the door lock on mine with just about anything that will go in the slot. The car didn't come with a door key, the locking filler cap key does both jobs.
I locked my Mk3 once with the key in the ignition, and was able to flip out one of the rear side windows because the original Midas factory bonding was about 90% detached by that time.

Thanks lads- after a couple of sessions of wiggling a loop of wire between the door frame and the body I managed to Lassoo the lock button and found the lock mechanism had detached itself from the key barrell. Looks like I might need to change the rear window to an external lock- but first I need to fix the door lock and add antifreeze to the radiator- thats for tomorrow
