It's a Zetec on fuel injection with an Emerald ECU. Normal service has now resumed, but the root cause of the problem remains something of a mystery!

I hope you didn't kill your alternator. Usually if you disconnect the battery with a running engine, it damages the circuitry for the 12V DC output.

No, because the alternator was obviously still running with the battery disconnected. Incidentally I once drove this car for several miles when the generator light came on in the dark. Next day I found the wire had fallen off the alternator but to my surprise it was still OK after reconnecting.
