That didn't sound too good...

Post by Geoff Butcher »

I was trundling home a couple of nights ago when there was a loud bang from the front of the car. It didn't seem as if I'd hit something and the car was still going along and answering the helm, so I pressed on at a cautious speed. When I got out I found the wheel arch was just about resting on the tyre. So what's broken? I haven't looked as it was a bit risky to jack it up on my steep driveway, and it's now been trailered away ready to go to my man on Monday. Of course it had to happen while No.2 car is in bits...

I would say the hydragas unit broke. If that's gone the suspension rests on the rebound buffer (so you could get home). Hopefully in the process of the failure the upper mount of the shock absorber didn't punch through the glass fibre.

Turns out it was the knuckle joint that broke. It snapped off flush with the ball, which made it rather difficult to winkle out, apparently...
