Expansion Tank / Thermostat housing pipework.

Post by mowcopds »

Hi I am just finishing installing a late 80`s MG Metro engine into my Midtec Bronze.
The previous set up was a standard early Metro/Allegro radiator with matching expansion tank, waterpump with bypass hose, and single outlet thermostat housing.
I have installed the MG Metro engine as standard,so no bypass hose and the MG thermostat housing with the small bypass outlet but without the sandwich plate as it wont fit under the bonnet. I`ve retained my original radiator.
My question is I now have two small bore outlets to go to the expansion tank.
One is the original from the top of my radiator and the new one from the MG Metro thermostat housing so do I need them both?
I`m thinking I should keep the MG Metro one as it provides the bypass facility and block off the radiator outlet.
I`m trying to keep the pipework to a minimum but could connect both if needed.
So any thoughts......
Regards Andy

Normally I would blank off the radiator pipe with a screw and some epoxy glue.

On mine I have used the Metro header tank as well which works really well and is similar to the setup used on injected Mini's. I've also added a pair of bleed points in the heater lines which make getting the air out of the system a breeze.

Thanks for the reply I think I already have a Metro header tank. Although I think its mounted a bit on the low side.
Did you use kit car catalogue bleed points or is there a good scrapyard source?

Hi

Sorry for the delay, we're still getting sorted after a house move.

I used these, they work a treat.
