Vinyl wrap
Has anybody ever considered vinyl wrapping their car. I'm thinking about it as the car needs a respray but vinyl wrap would theoretically mean no spider cracks or bubbles. I remember seeing it on wheeler dealers once and I'm sure it was about a grand to do a camper van so probably cheaper than a top quality paint job. Any views appreciated as the body is starting to show its age pretty badly which isn't acceptable with every inch of it mechanically modified or replaced
Re: Vinyl wrap
Yes, I did it last year for Stoneleigh, though admittedly it was on the cheap (£30) using Homebase sticky back plastic and it was also done in a rush so it was a poor effort on my behalf but the effect was it got attention

Re: Vinyl wrap
I had a partial wrap done of my Smart ForTwo earlier this year....I am certainly going to go this way for my soon to be acquired Mk 3 as the original gel coat is looking its age now.

Re: Vinyl wrap
There was a chap on the quantum forum who had his 2+2 wrapped by a well respected outfit, problem is with single piece monocoques such as the quantum and midas is there are no separate panels to allow the separate sheets of wrap to hide, there were joins all over the place, no fault of the wrappers because you would never do the car as a whole but to me and others it looked ok from a distance and on photos but very poor up close, plus every join has to be overlapped because the vinyl will shrink no matter what quality it is and this just added to the poor overall effect considering it cost over 1k, and only lasts 5 years, I'd go for a re spray personally

Re: Vinyl wrap
I took my mk3 to a vinyl wrap company they told me the frog eyes would be a pain to do and it would have to be joined
Re: Vinyl wrap
Vinyl wrapping really is just a temporary cosmetic and there's no way on earth I'd pay the sorts of money some companies quote for. Something I'm seriously considering doing to temporarily smarten up my Gold Coupe and arrest any further decline in the gelcoat is to spray it with Plastidip which is a pealable paint. I had intended to have done it by now but I've been too busy with other things. I will at some point totally restore the Gold but as you can see I've got another Midas I'm working on and want to get that one finished before I rip the Gold appart
Re: Vinyl wrap
The wheeler dealers episode where they wrap the vw van is on Quest at 7 tonight.
Re: Vinyl wrap
I just had the quote from my local wrapper to do a full wrap of my Mk3.
He also said that he would do a time lapse video of the whole process which I will upload somewhere for you all to view.
This will happen in January 2015.
First job is to get the wheels powder coated in gloss black so he can work his magic on the rims (as per my Smart above)

Re: Vinyl wrap
Totall success. You should email Complete Kit Car. It deserves to be on the cover. Also a nice subject for them in the mag.
