Does anyone have any experience of the so-called 'flat' wiper blades, i.e. the ones with a built -in steel spring rather than a frame?

yes. I recently fitted a pair to my Gold...and they work a lot better than the old ones....which had a habit of not wiping at all in the crossover region in the centre of the screen !
