Odd electrical problem, help please!

Post by Rich »

Hi,

I've got most things working on the car now and I'm up against an odd problem. On and around the dash the following aren't working.

Main beam dash light
Head light dash light
Indicator/wiper switch illumination
Temp gauge
Fuel gauge (possibly, not much fuel in it)

My other warning lamps for oil pressure, handbrake, battery are all working. The rev counter works fine. The common earth for the non working bulbs is good, the bulbs are good, the fuses are good.

It's a MK2 Metro loom and it's doing my head in, squinting at the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual is giving me a headache.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Do the actual lights work?

Might be your dim dip unit if fitted, test it with the ignition or and off to see if that makes a difference. The unit is normally on the drivers side inner wing. The other option is the switch I've had odd things happen when the wires between the stalk and the switch casing parts company. For the temp guage short the sender wire down to earth and see if the guage moves up.

or having thought about it check whether both instrument pod connectors are seated properly and are not dirty...I had this while being lazy and testing and instrument pod by disconnecting the plugs without taking the dash out using the access hole under the dash and I didn't put them back properly!

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply, I should have updated the thread.

The problem turned out to be two-fold, a blown fuse that I'd missed and dodgy contacts in the switch arm. I hope I don't have to strip that switch out again, it's a real pain to get back together.

I still don't have a temperature or fuel gauge, but I'm working on that between rainfalls.
