L_Jonez Mk2 rebuild

Thought I'd best get around to starting a build thread for my mk2


Here's the reason I have bought it....

In 1981/2 my father built a Midas from scratch, he used it as his daily car for a few years but was forced to sell it in 85 because I was born. He sold it to a local guy and it was never seen again until may when my father bumped into the guy in a shop, after a quick chat it turned out it was still in his garage and it was for salelast time he used it was 1988. I had to have it! I'm not sure how many mk2's where built? But this one is chassis no.91 so I'm guessing it's pretty early

The previous owner had removed the cooper S engine my father fitted but it was included in the sale :-)
My father bought some 5x12 cosmics with the kit, they where in the guys attic

Since then I've not really done much, just started stripping parts off it. The engine bay is pretty much empty now plus the interior is stripped.
I did discover a handy cup holder

Congrats on this unique find. Good luck with the rebuild. Is that color original gelcoat? never seen this beige before.
284 mk2's were built.

Yep the original gel coat, wasn't a fan of the colour but its starting to grow on me

Only thing left in the engine bay now is the brake master cylinder which is essentially a lump of rust. I think I might have to butcher it and the pedal box to get it out :-(

Nice and clean. I think I'll separate my glove box from the dash at some point, that should help speed up the refitting process.

Managed to get the master cylinder out intact :-)

Give the bulkhead a wipe down which shows the original (unfaded) gel coat... The colour reminds me of a 70/80's bath

Does anyone recognise what the brake master cylinder came from? It's probably going in the bin but it would be nice to know.

Whilst under the rear I took a pic of the rear beam. My father can't remember it being galvanised so Im starting to think the previous owner replaced it at some point and painted it in hammerite.
Can any one tell me if its an original that's been galvanised? Or a aftermarket/home made item. It does seem pretty well made

The rear beam was zinc passivated only as standard, it looks like an original to me, so someone must have had it galvanised.
There have been copies made, I'll have to check my original and copy to be certain, my gut feeling is that it's an original though.
It's certainly kept it in perfect condition.

Looks identical to my beam - and I believe that was an original.

Ah that's good news, the galv has certainly worked.
