MK4 cortez / excelsior weight / corner weight front rear

Post by Jin »

hi all
does anyone have an idea (rough or precise) as to what the corner weights of a mk4 are?

Doing spring calcs etc as the mo but ive no idea what is what, I’ve had a vague guess at 450lb fronts and 300 rear (corner weights not spring rates)

can anyone throw anything into the pot even if its mk3?

Cheers

Alistair may be your best bet, rear coilovers on my mk3 cabriolet are rated 100lb, don't know the corner weights though

I have just found a letter from Alistair to John Crowson sent when John was preparing my Excelsior for its SVA which includes these figures:
Design Weight axle 1 600kg
Design Weight axle 2 500kg
Total Weight 1060kg

Brian weighed his mk4 and it was around 840 kgs if I remember correctly.

That seems very heavy! I weighed my Ginetta G21 years ago and it was 830kg, that's with a steel chassis, Holbay Rapier engine and box and a beam axle... :o

I think the figures I quoted are the maximum design weights, i.e. fuelled up and loaded with people and luggage. According to the Metro workshop manual, a 3 door weighs between 815 and 845kg

Thanks everyone.
I'm leaving much of what I need to trial and error, I had thought the mk4 was under 700kg though?

I can see why you might think that. Autocar weighed their road test MK 3 at around 806 kgs. MK 2 at 660 kgs.

I bet yours is north of 850 kgs. of course you know the only way to know for certain is to weigh it.

This is true, and there is a weigh bridge not far from where I work, seems obvious really :)
