Scrap front Hydragas units wanted

Post by Rich »

Does anyone have a pair locally? I have an idea that involves chopping up some displacers and using working ones doesn't make any sense.

I should be at the Exeter show in November if that's any use.

Rich,

You should have asked me!

I had two under the bench....and I bet I know exactly what you are going to do! Using displacers and springs inside.

Borrocks! How typical is that?

To be fair the idea didn't occur until after we'd spoken, using the displacer bodies for the upper mounting for the springs would allow a longer length to be used and avoid the need to weld the frame. A totally reversible conversion.

The problem I'm having is finding the relative rate of a hydragas displacer, eg do I need 200lb springs to replace them etc.

What is the ID of the springs you've got there? 1.9" or 2 1/4" I'm guessing the latter from memory.

Yes that idea crossed my mind in the past...before I went down the route I did.

I think I have mentioned it on here to Hans too somewhere.

The OD of the springs is: 3.5"
The ID of the springs is: 2.25"
overall length is. 3.71"
Diameter of top hat is: 3.93"
Inner ring is: 2.21"
Overall depth of top hat is: 0.39"
depth of inner ring is: 0.23"
Diameter of top hat hole is: 1.5"
Spring coil thickness is: 0.65"

Cone depth is: 1.15
overall diameter is: 3.22"
spring seat diameter is: 2.25
spring seat depth is:0.52"
Cone to knuckle seat diameter is: 1.75"
Cone depth from spring seat to taper to knuckle seat is: 0.28"

Bolt knuckle interface length is: 2.75"
threads 11 threads per inch
m20 width
head depth is: .165"
knuckle hole ID is: .4915"
knuckle hole depth is:0.8670"

Thank you David.

Just looking under the arch I should be able to use a spring at least 3" longer and still have greater clearance than with normal displacers. That should give more wiggle room for getting the spring into place, particularly if I build in more adjustment on the threaded adjuster to avoid those crow-bar moments.

Would you reckon a starting rate of 200lbs would be reasonable?

Any idea what the rear coil overs are running at?

Yes thats true Rich.

Its only a one off crow bar moment though ;). I bet they bed in after a bit.

Not sure on rates for rear springs but I know Alan and Stuart have been playing around with settings, using dual springs (ie main spring plus helper spring).

.....Maybe this is one for Alistair to answer. He owns the company so should know what AVO/Spax set them at! ;)

Im sure the front will be more though....due to weight of engine/subframe. I should ask Geoff Watson on that, rated for road use.

Kind regards,

David

Good idea, I think I'll start a separate thread as it's more than likely the discussion is being missed here.
