Windscreen replacement

Happy new year, Folks

Will shortly be replacing the screen in our Bronze, all tips, advice on how to make this as straight forward as poss will be most welcome.

I have done this many years ago on a standard car, we have a good screen and one of Alistair's new rubbers awaiting in the workshop.

A couple of specific points to ask...

Any thoughts on where it's best to place the join in the rubber?

Any need for sealant? If so, what type?

From experience I joined on the side A pillar. my logic being that on either the top or the bottom the rainwater would collect and possibly run in, on the side it would run past and have less chance of leaking. You shouldn't need to use sealant but I have used rubber adhesive from a cycle repair kit to bond the ends.

Well, after numerous attempts to get the screen and rubber in using only plastic tools as recommended by various sources, I lost the will to live, and used metal tools as gently as possible....and it's in!

Could hear very small glass chipping sounds in the the process but I was at the sh*t or bust stage by then.

The fibreglass edge of the body in the screen aperture is very thin, and had weakened over time, which was adding to the stress levels, as a couple of small chunks broke away.

Just hope it doesn't leak

I will be fitting one in my MK3 Coupe in the near future and hope to use the cord method but I'm not relishing the job one bit.

I tried with a cord, that's when the body edge started to fracture.

Could not of got it in on my own, either, needed help to keep the part that was in, IN, while I worked my way around.

I see what you mean, I suppose the gel coat is a bit brittle around the edges. I wonder if fitting the seal first and trying to cord the screen into the seal might be another option, I'll just have to see how it goes with fingers crossed.
