I'd be wary of lowering the column too much. Those rubber donuts that connect to the rack dont like being taken out of shape too much.
Mine was cracked again after 2 years. When I replaced subframe for coil conversion it needed replacing. Last one was changed 2 years ago. I noticed the first one was shagged too before I changed it, to use a phrase.
There's a new one in there from the rebuild so I've got a little leeway for now, I suspect half the problem is non-genuine replacements, pity there isn't a polyurethane option available.
