door striker nut

Post by Hans Efde »

I've bought a Metro door striker from a dealer, but now have the problem of finding out what type of nut should be used. For the convertible a M12 nut is needed (on the Metro this is welded to the structure), the Midas manual just says "M12 with fine thread". Well that's great. In my area no shop has a type of nut that fits on this thing. On Ebay several M12 nyloc nuts can be found with fine thread. But which one? Can anyone give advise on which nut should be used before I order the wrong ones?

Dare I ask how much the door striker was?

What did you do with the old nut?

Hello Hans,

From memory there are two thread pitches for an M12 thread, 1.5mm & 1.75mm. I'm at my workshop tomorrow so I will have a look at my taps or thread gauge. The answer lye's in the Zeus engineering tables if I can find mine. I'll post confirmation tomorrow evening.

Hi David,
The dealer found it in a box with bits and bolts. It was used, but in perfect condition. I gave him 5 euro's for it. I gave the old door striker with nut to my brother to see if he could rework it in the factory he works. The old striker and nut had coarse thread. I think the previous builder of my car had cut a new thread on it, but he did a poor job. He destroyed the thread, therefore I couldn't fasten it properly anymore.
Hi Alan,
I measured the thread on the new door striker. From top to top it is 1mm or 1.25mm. My brother asked me if it was UNF. I have no idea! I have no knowledge about kind of threads (anymore), how to recognize them etc. Sometimes that drives me mad on this car. Metric or imperial sizes, fine or coarse, it's all there. Why didn't they standardize?

Ahh...yes You just reminded me how mine is fastened.

Its a nut, spot welded to a plate. Was meant to run in a track from what I remember. I just put it in situ and tightened it up.

Can you not get these plates from a scrapper r100, metro?

Hello Hans,

Re: identifying the thread, if it is a course thread it may be UNC ( unified coarse as opposed to unified fine) first measure the diameter and then the pitch in mm. I will convert the sizes to imperial measurements and try and identify the thread from the Zeus book, if I can find it. Then I should be able to locate a suitable nut in the UK and post it to you. I have a very obliging nut and bolt man! If we can sort out the correct nut I will get a few, for stock or get some made!

Hello David,
I've not forgotten that I need to collect the sub frames. Will after Easter do?

Hi Alan,
Thanks for the offer. I may make use of it, but first my brother has taken it to the factory to see if there is anything in stock that fits. If not I'll get back to you.
Cheers, Hans

Here's the last bit on the door striker nut subject. We found out that the Metro doorstriker uses a M12x1 mm nut. The strange thing is that the one that came of my car is different from the original Metro doorstriker. My brother had a new one made in the factory, but this time with a normal M12 thread. I am going to fit it tomorrow because I can't wait to get the car on the road again.
Below a pic of the doorstrikers: top is the one that came of my Midas, middle the original Metro one and bottom the special made soorstriker.
