1.5 Ratio roller rockers

Post by Rich »

Has anyone else fitted a set of these?

I recently obtained a lightly used set over on Turbo Minis and fitted them just in time for my master cylinder to let go. Now everything is back together I've had chance to get a feel for the difference. I was expecting a slight loss in the bottom end but to be honest if it's there it isn't noticeable, through the mid and top ranges the engine feels to breathe easier and pull stronger. The idle is a little 'cammy' but it's perfectly well behaved in traffic.

I'd say for the improvement it's worth it.

My engine spec is ACDodd 1330 A+, Kent Megadyne 266 cam, SU HIF 44, Maniflow LCB, Minispares (ported) inlet, Megajolt ignition.

I'm going to have to bite the bullet and get it on the rollers at Tipton to get it all set up right.

Rich,

I've got a set of Titan 1.5:1 full roller rockers on mine. When I had my engine rebuilt by Revivals after it done 80k miles in my first Gold, they recommended them as part of their fast road build.

My engine must be very similar to yours, as it too is a 1330 A+, Kent Megadyne 266 cam, SU HIF 44, LCB of unknown origin leading to a Minispares RC40 twin box centreline exhaust. The ignition is a standard BL electronic. I've yet to put it on the rolling road, but intend to fairly soon as the guy who built the engine is keen to know how good it is. He was amazed that I managed to average 48.5mpg on my trip to Scotland last year.

The picture below is of the lump as built in August 2004 in its Metro configuration ready to go in to my Gold. It lasted for two weeks and four hundred miles before a 360 degree manoeuvre around an inappropriate axis terminated the Gold. It's now done something over ten thousand miles in my Bronze since June 2009, and is nicely run in and going strong.

Hi Jon,

My engine used to look nice and clean like that! Is your head ported too?

I know that before the rockers went on the Gold would manage 54 mpg on a run (up to Birmingham and back). Running around it seems a little worse on fuel, though the cold weather means there's more sitting around warming up and I'm just running the 12 miles to work and back rather than longer runs. One day I'll fit some undertrays and see what difference they make to the overall mpg.

Rich,

My engine is nothing like as clean as that now. My head was treated to what my man considered to be all the essential and cost effective mods. He did everything he'd do for a Mini-X 'production' class head, so nothing radical.

If your rockers are like mine they will have a hex socket and lock nut on the adjusters. Be careful not to overtighten the nut as I know to my cost that it is very easy to shear the adjuster. Mine failed level with the bottom of the hex socket. Fortunately I live about half an hour's drive from Titan, so a replacement was easily obtained.

The adjusters on mine appear to be standard A series stuff, one of the lock nuts loosened (translates to..wasn't tightened properly in the first place....) and it dropped onto three cylinders with a top end rattle. I think my rockers are originally from Minispeed.
