New seals for the rear side windows?

Post by minisweden »

Finally I had time to get my Mk3 Coupe registered in Sweden. :D Took a lof of time dealing with the Swedish DVLA. But now it´s taxed insured and tested....So now I am starting to deal with some minor things left to do, like the seals around the rear side windows. Where can I get new ones? Mine have many splits and are dry.

Congratulations on registration!

I converted mine to opening windows. it now just has a pretty standard side press rubber, similar to the doors. Nice to open in this unusually nice weather we are having in the UK right now ;).

The Midas factory used an S-seal they cut in half. The window was bonded onto it, usually they would leak and it would be necessary to fill the gap between the window and body with sealant. I have seen other rear windows placed with the S-seal intact and the window pressed in, I suppose that's a smaller window I had on my coupees.
Alternatively you could just find a U-seal wide enough to fit over the glassfibre edge. Then paint an edge with sikaflex black primer on the inside of the window and bond the window onto the U-seal. The last step is perhaps easier done by a glass fitting specialist. They can also check if there are leaks.
