Price of a new Midas today?

In 1982 the then newly launched Midas mk2 was just shy of £7000 on the road, according to road tests at the time that was £800 more than a Golf GTI.

Fast forward to 2012 and a Golf GTI is around £28,000, four and a half times more expensive.

Question is would you pay £31,500 for a Midas now?

Technology has moved on and so has the Golf.

Wouldn't consider it unless it came as a full kit including suspension and a Kad type engine and carbon fibre construction for body.

Also better light pods too, all round.

It would a whole new car by now David.

Having said £7,000 for an almost fully built new car at the time, the soon to be available kit at £2,000 would have got you a Midas, so £9,000 today isn't so bad is it?

For me it would have to be carbonfibre, fully adustable double wishbones and a twin cam engine

Think the main problem today for the 'Midas' brand is that the market for kitcars has severely shrunk since the Mk1 first came on the scene.

As a Transport Design student, I struggle to see how someone would buy or build a 'new' Midas in 2012 - maybe with a new conceptual design could help revive the Midas brand.

I reckon a mk1 inspired design, with bigger proportions, modern running gear, would appeal to a far greater audience - Just look at the success of the Ultima - That is a design of kitcar that I would definitely pay the asking price for
