Rustoleum

Post by max midas »

Time has come for a repaint, can't afford a professional spray job, don't own a garage, so I'm going to try the Rustoleum route.
I've decided on BRG for the bodywork (Ral 6005) and Jet Black for the hard top (there is UV damage in the gel coat).
So far I've painted the front bumper, and am well pleased with the results.
The texture when cured is slightly orange peal, but no worse than a regular spray job.
It's good thick paint as in It's very opaque, only one coat so far, no drips or runs, and a lovely finish.
In future (bonnet, boot, back bumper and doors) I'll paint in a heated room as this paint was still tacky 3 days later (it was close to zero outside and the room is unheated). That's why there is dust in the paint, which I'm not worried about - I'll flat it out before the next coat.

Anyway, first photos of my newly painted bumper!

If you need more I've got a large can of the same colour going spare. It was destined for a Beetle that dissolved before it got coated.

I'm tempted to take up your offer as about 20% of the can has gone already, I suppose the two paints will match if they're the same formulation of Ral 6005.

How did you apply it, max?

I'll do a double check on the colour, though using white spirits to thin it you should already have enough to cover a car.

Where in the world are you Max?

@ Geoff, yes with a roller. Wickes - tray, roller, 5 tray insets and 10 spare rollers less than £15.
@ Rich, Yes I mixed in approx 10-15% white spirit, just enough for the temperature as it's a good thick coat but no runs/drips.
Am in S. Wales, but can travel (once the bumper is back on  ).

Forgot to mention, there's practically no odour with this paint, I could almost paint it in our bedroom. Certainly better than Celly or two pack. :D

This paint definately needs heat to cure.
I cured the painted bumper in a heated room in the end before putting the it back on the car.
The roller and tray are still in the unheated room I painted it in and the paint on them is still wet, 11 days after painting!
